چکیده

This paper investigates whether the inherent non-stationarity of macroeconomic time series is entirely due to a random walk or also to non-linear components. Applying the numerical tools of the analysis of dynamical systems to long time series for the US, we reject the hypothesis that these series are generated solely by a linear stochastic process. Contrary to the Real Business Cycle theory that attributes the irregular behavior of the system to exogenous random factors, we maintain that the ‡uctuations in the time series we examined cannot be explained only by means of external shocks plugged into linear autoregressive models. A dynamical and non-linear explanation may be useful for the double aim of describing and forecasting more accurately the evolution of the system. Linear growth models that ...nd empirical veri...cation on linear econometric analysis, are therefore seriously called in question. Conversely non-linear dynamical models may enable us to achieve a more complete information about economic phenomena from the same data sets used in the empirical analysis which are in support of Real Business Cycle Theory. We conclude that Real Business Cycle theory and more in general the unit root autoregressive models are an inadequate device for a satisfactory understanding of economic time series. A theoretical approach grounded on non-linear metric methods, may however allow to identify non-linear structures that endogenously generate ‡uctuations in macroeconomic time series. Patterns in Random Walks and Brownian Motion

We ask if it is possible to find some particular continuous paths of unit length in linear Brownian motion. Beginning with a discrete version of the problem, we derive the asymptotics of the expected waiting time for several interesting patterns. These suggest corresponding results on the existence/non-existence of continuous paths embedded in Brownian motion. With further effort we are able to...

The distributions of some characteristics of random walks and related combinatorial identities

In this talk, we show an interesting fact that a quarter of paths of random walks of any length n(≥ 2) have two maximums. Moreover, it holds that the asymptotic distribution of number of maximums of paths obeys the geometric distribution of parameter 1/2. Furthermore, we provide the generating function for counting number of paths jointly with number k of maximums and number l of minimums. This...

Convergence of coalescing nonsimple random walks to the Brownian web

The Brownian Web (BW) is a family of coalescing Brownian motions starting from every point in space and time R×R. It was first introduced by Arratia, and later analyzed in detail by Tóth and Werner. More recently, Fontes, Isopi, Newman and Ravishankar (FINR) gave a characterization of the BW, and general convergence criteria allowing in principle either crossing or noncrossing paths, which they...

Multiple Random Walks on Paths and Grids

We derive several new results on multiple random walks on “low dimensional” graphs. First, inspired by an example of a weighted random walk on a path of three vertices given by Efremenko and Reingold [7], we prove the following dichotomy: as the path length n tends to infinity, we have a super-linear speed-up w.r.t. the cover time if and only if the number of walks k is equal to 2. An important...

Local search on protein residue networks

Self-avoiding random walks were performed on protein residue networks. Compared with protein residue networks with randomized links, the probability of a walk being successful is lower and the length of successful walks shorter in (non-randomized) protein residue networks. Fewer successful walks and shorter successful walks point to higher communication specificity between protein residues, a c...
